Simple Foods That Support a Healthy Immune System
Your immune system helps protect your body from infections and other illnesses. While no single food can magically prevent sickness, eating a balanced and varied diet gives your body important nutrients that support normal immune function.
The good news is that supporting your health does not require expensive or complicated foods. Many simple foods available every day can be part of a healthy diet.
1. Fruits
Fruits such as oranges, mangoes, guavas, bananas, apples, and pawpaw provide vitamins, minerals, fibre, and other beneficial plant compounds. Citrus fruits and other fruits rich in vitamin C can contribute to a healthy diet and support normal immune function.
Try adding fresh fruit to breakfast or having it as a snack.
2. Vegetables
Vegetables are an important source of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants. Dark-green leafy vegetables such as spinach, sukuma wiki, and kale are nutritious choices. Carrots, tomatoes, peppers, and other colourful vegetables can also add variety to your meals.
Aim to include vegetables regularly rather than relying on just one type.
3. Beans and Lentils
Beans, lentils, peas, and other legumes provide protein, fibre, and several important nutrients. They are also affordable and can easily be added to meals such as rice, ugali, chapati, or vegetables.
4. Eggs
Eggs provide protein and several vitamins and minerals. They can be an easy addition to breakfast or another meal. Other protein sources, including fish, chicken, milk, and beans, can also contribute to a balanced diet.
5. Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds provide nutrients and healthy fats. Examples include groundnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other unsalted nuts or seeds. A small amount can be added to meals or eaten as a snack.
6. Whole Grains
Foods such as oats, millet, whole-grain maize, whole-wheat products, and brown rice provide carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, and minerals. WHO recommends choosing whole grains and other minimally processed foods as part of a varied diet.
7. Fish and Other Protein Foods
Fish, chicken, eggs, milk, beans, and other protein-rich foods provide nutrients needed for growth, repair, and normal body functions. Including different protein sources throughout the week can help make your diet more varied.
A Simple Way to Build Your Meals
You don't need a special "immune-boosting" meal. Instead, try to combine different food groups throughout the day—for example, porridge with fruit for breakfast, beans and vegetables with a whole-grain or maize-based staple for lunch, and eggs or fish with vegetables and another staple for dinner.
