Description

How to use

One 750 mg tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, swallowed whole with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food, but it must be separated by at least two hours from antacids, iron tablets, zinc, calcium supplements, milk-based supplements and sucralfate, all of which bind it and stop it being absorbed. Drink plenty of water through the course. Complete the number of days prescribed, which for the 750 mg dose is often shorter than a standard course.

Important warnings

Fluoroquinolones carry warnings that other antibiotics do not, and this class is reserved for infections where nothing simpler will do. Stop the tablet and contact a doctor at once if you develop pain, swelling or tenderness in a tendon, especially the Achilles at the back of the ankle, because tendon rupture can occur even after one or two doses and is far more likely in people over 60, on steroids, or with a transplant. Also stop for new pins and needles, numbness or burning in the hands or feet, and for confusion, hallucinations, severe anxiety or suicidal thoughts. Avoid in epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, known long QT syndrome, and in children and adolescents. Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid strong sun and tanning beds, which can cause severe burning. Tell your prescriber about warfarin, diabetes medicines, steroids and any heart-rhythm drug.

Storage

Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in the blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack, and return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping them for another illness.
