Description

How to use

The powder is reconstituted with water by the pharmacist or exactly as the label directs. Shake the bottle vigorously before each dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Give at the start of a meal to limit stomach upset. Usually dosed twice daily, twelve hours apart. Work out before you leave the counter whether the bottle covers the whole prescribed course at your child's dose, because running out on day six of a seven-day course is the commonest reason a course is left incomplete. Discard any remainder at the end of the in-use period.

Important warnings

Not for a child with a penicillin or beta-lactam allergy, or one who has had jaundice or liver upset with amoxiclav before. Mention kidney or liver disease and glandular fever to the prescriber. Seek emergency care for facial, lip or tongue swelling, wheeze, breathing difficulty, or a blistering rash. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course, and yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or pale stools. Never top up an old bottle with water to stretch it, and never keep a reconstituted bottle for a future illness: the clavulanate degrades and the remaining liquid is not a reliable antibiotic.

Storage

Store the sealed powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. After reconstitution, refrigerate between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, do not freeze, and discard the remainder after seven days or whatever period the label specifies. Mark the reconstitution date on the bottle. Keep the cap tight, shake before every dose, and store it on a shelf in the fridge rather than the door, where the temperature swings most.
