Metronidazole 200mg/5ml suspension contains metronidazole 200mg in every 5ml and is used to treat certain bacterial and parasitic infections.
It is commonly used for amoebiasis, giardiasis and infections affecting the stomach and intestines, teeth, gums and other areas caused by susceptible organisms.
Shake well before each dose and use exactly as prescribed; complete the full course and avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.
Shake well before every dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Give it after food to reduce nausea and the metallic taste. Usually three times daily, spaced as evenly as the day allows. Course length depends on what is being treated: a few days for a dental or anaerobic infection, five to seven days for giardiasis, and longer for amoebiasis, often with a second medicine alongside. Complete every dose. Keep fluids up throughout, particularly if there is diarrhoea.
Absolutely no alcohol during the course and for at least 48 hours after the last dose, in any form including alcohol-containing tonics, syrups and mouthwashes; the reaction causes flushing, vomiting, severe headache and palpitations. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy or any seizure disorder, blood disorders, and any existing numbness or tingling. Urine may darken, which is harmless. Report new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, unsteadiness, or a persistent severe headache. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless specifically prescribed. Metronidazole interacts with warfarin, lithium, phenytoin and disulfiram; give the pharmacist a full medicine list.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright, tightly capped, protected from light and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before every dose. Once opened, use within the period stated on the carton and not after the printed expiry date. Do not retain leftover suspension for a future illness, and do not give it to another child without that child being assessed.
