Description
Dextracin is a combined antibiotic and corticosteroid eye/ear preparation containing neomycin sulphate 0.5% w/v and dexamethasone phosphate 0.1% w/v. Neomycin helps control susceptible bacterial infections, while dexamethasone reduces associated inflammation, redness and swelling.
It may be prescribed for selected bacterial conjunctivitis and external ear infections (otitis externa) where inflammation is also present. It is not appropriate for every red or painful eye, because corticosteroid-containing eye drops can worsen certain infections.
