Augmentin 228mg/5ml is an antibiotic suspension containing Amoxicillin 200mg and Clavulanic Acid 28.5mg per 5ml, used to fight bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for infections of the ear, throat, sinuses, chest/lungs, skin, teeth and urinary tract when caused by susceptible bacteria.
Shake well before each dose and give exactly as prescribed; complete the full course, and do not use it for colds or flu.
The pharmacist reconstitutes the powder with water, or you follow the label precisely. Shake the bottle vigorously before every dose and measure only with the syringe or cup supplied. Give each dose at the start of a feed or meal, which is the most effective single step for reducing diarrhoea. Dosed twice daily at this strength, twelve hours apart. Complete the course as prescribed. If a dose is vomited within half an hour, repeat it; beyond that, wait for the next scheduled dose rather than doubling.
Not for a child with a penicillin or beta-lactam allergy, or one who has had jaundice or liver trouble after a previous amoxiclav course. Tell the prescriber about kidney or liver disease and about glandular fever, in which amoxicillin produces a florid rash. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheeze, breathing difficulty, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course, and any yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or pale stools. Keep the reconstituted bottle refrigerated; a warm bottle loses its clavulanate.
Store the sealed powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. Once made up, refrigerate between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, do not freeze, and discard the remainder after seven days. Write the reconstitution date on the bottle. Keep it on a fridge shelf rather than in the door, where temperature fluctuates most. Shake before every dose, keep the cap tightly closed, and store out of reach of children.
