Description

Shalcip 500mg tablets contain Ciprofloxacin 500mg, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to fight certain bacterial infections.

It is commonly used for susceptible infections such as urinary tract, gastrointestinal, skin and some respiratory infections, helping stop the growth of the bacteria causing the infection.

Take only as prescribed and complete the course; separate it from antacids, iron or zinc products, and seek medical advice if you develop tendon pain, swelling or unusual muscle/joint symptoms.

How to use

One 500 mg tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, or as prescribed, swallowed whole with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food, but it must be separated by at least two hours from milk and dairy products, antacids, iron, zinc, calcium and magnesium supplements, multivitamins and sucralfate, all of which bind it and can destroy most of the dose. Drink plenty of water throughout the course to reduce the risk of crystals forming in the urine. Complete the course as prescribed.

Important warnings

Stop the tablet and contact a doctor immediately for pain, swelling or tenderness in a tendon, especially the Achilles, since rupture can occur even early in a course and is much more likely over 60, on steroids, or after transplant. Stop also for new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, and for confusion, hallucinations, severe anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts. Avoid in epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, known long QT syndrome, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in children and adolescents unless a specialist prescribes it. Avoid strong sun. Ciprofloxacin greatly increases theophylline and tizanidine levels, and interacts with warfarin and some diabetes medicines; give the pharmacist a full list.

Storage

Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and out of reach of children. Keep tablets in the blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack. Return any unused tablets to the pharmacy; leftover ciprofloxacin kept at home is among the most commonly misused antibiotics in the country, taken for coughs and colds it does nothing for.
