Cefuroxime 500mg tablets contain cefuroxime 500mg, a cephalosporin antibiotic used to fight certain bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest/lungs, skin and urinary tract when caused by susceptible bacteria.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably after food to improve absorption, and complete the full course; do not use for colds or flu.
One 500 mg tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, giving a five-day course from this pack, or exactly as prescribed. Take it just after food, never on an empty stomach: cefuroxime axetil absorption roughly doubles with a meal, and a course taken between meals may simply fail. Swallow whole with water, since the tablet is extremely bitter if broken or chewed. Keep to the twelve-hour interval and complete the course even after the cough and fever have settled.
Do not take if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a cephalosporin, or to penicillin with facial swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell your prescriber about kidney disease, which requires dose reduction, and any previous antibiotic-associated colitis. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face or throat, wheeze, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course, and do not treat that with an over-the-counter anti-diarrhoeal. Cefuroxime can produce false positive urine glucose readings and affect the Coombs test.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from moisture, sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in the blister until each dose; the bathroom cabinet is the worst place for them because of steam. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack, and return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping them for a future illness.
