Description

How to use

One tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, with a full glass of water, with or without food. Keep at least two hours between the tablet and milk, yoghurt, antacids, iron, calcium, zinc or magnesium supplements, multivitamins and sucralfate, all of which bind it in the gut and can destroy most of the dose. Drink two to three litres of water a day through the course. Take it at the same times daily, complete the prescribed number of days, and avoid strong sun and tanning while taking it.

Important warnings

Stop and contact a doctor immediately for tendon pain or swelling, especially the Achilles, for new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, or for confusion, hallucinations, severe anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts. Avoid in epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, known long QT syndrome, pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children and adolescents. Ciprofloxacin sharply raises theophylline and tizanidine levels and interacts with warfarin, steroids and diabetes medicines. Report severe or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course, and never treat that with an anti-diarrhoeal.

Storage

Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light, out of reach of children. Keep tablets in the blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy. Low price makes this the antibiotic most likely to be bought in bulk and kept at home, and a household stock of ciprofloxacin is the single most common source of inappropriate self-treatment we see at the counter.
