Diamisole Tablets (Metronidazole & Diloxanide Furoate)

Description

How to use

One tablet three times daily for ten days, which this pack of thirty provides in full, or as your prescriber directs. Take each tablet after food with a full glass of water to blunt the nausea and metallic taste, and swallow whole rather than chewing. Space doses evenly through the day. Complete the entire course. If you vomit within half an hour of a dose, take another; beyond that, wait for the next scheduled dose rather than doubling up.

Important warnings

No alcohol during the course or for at least 48 hours after the last tablet, including alcohol-containing tonics, cough syrups and mouthwashes; the reaction causes flushing, severe headache, vomiting and palpitations. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy or any seizure disorder, blood disorders, and any existing numbness or tingling. Report new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet during this ten-day course, since longer metronidazole exposure raises the risk of peripheral neuropathy. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless prescribed. Provide a full medicine list, as metronidazole interacts with warfarin, lithium, phenytoin and disulfiram.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Do not save part of a pack for a future episode of diarrhoea; a new episode needs its own assessment, because not all dysentery is amoebic and treating the wrong organism delays the right treatment.
