Norfloxacin 400mg tablets contain norfloxacin 400mg, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to fight certain bacterial infections.
It is mainly used for susceptible urinary tract and some intestinal bacterial infections, helping stop the growth of bacteria causing the infection.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably on an empty stomach; separate it from antacids, iron, calcium or zinc products, and seek medical advice if you develop tendon pain or swelling.
One tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart. Norfloxacin should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before food or two hours after, with a full glass of water, because food reduces its absorption. Keep at least two hours between the tablet and milk, yoghurt, antacids, iron, calcium, zinc or magnesium supplements and multivitamins, which bind it in the gut. Drink two to three litres of water daily through the course. Complete the prescribed number of days and avoid strong sunlight.
Stop the tablet and contact a doctor immediately for tendon pain, swelling or tenderness, particularly the Achilles, for new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, or for confusion, hallucinations, severe anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts. Avoid in epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, known long QT syndrome, pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children and adolescents. Tell your prescriber about warfarin, theophylline, ciclosporin, steroids and diabetes medicines. Report severe or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course. Seek same-day care for fever, chills, vomiting or one-sided back pain, which suggest a kidney infection.
Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return any unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping them for the next episode of urinary symptoms, since recurrent infections need a urine culture rather than a repeated empirical course.
