Tinidazole 500mg tablets contain tinidazole 500mg, an antimicrobial medicine used to treat certain infections caused by parasites and bacteria.
It is commonly used for amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis, depending on the infection being treated.
Take exactly as prescribed, preferably with food; avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 72 hours after the last dose.
Take exactly the dose and number of days your prescriber has written, which for tinidazole is often a single 2 g dose of four tablets, or 2 g daily for two or three days for intestinal amoebiasis. Take it with food, which is essential when the dose is large, and swallow with a full glass of water. For trichomoniasis the sexual partner is treated simultaneously. Do not repeat a dose because symptoms have not gone by the next day; the bowel or vaginal lining takes several days to recover after the organism is cleared.
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least three days after the last dose, in any form including tonics, cough syrups and mouthwashes, because tinidazole with alcohol causes flushing, vomiting, throbbing headache and palpitations. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders, or existing numbness and tingling in the hands or feet. Urine may darken, which is harmless. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless specifically prescribed. Report new numbness or tingling, unsteadiness, or a severe persistent headache. Tinidazole interacts with warfarin, phenytoin, lithium and disulfiram.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping a partial course, since a future episode of diarrhoea may have a completely different cause requiring different treatment.
