Description

How to use

One tablet three times a day for ten days, which is exactly what this pack of thirty provides, or as your prescriber directs. Take each tablet after food with a full glass of water to reduce nausea and the metallic taste. Swallow whole. Space the doses evenly through the day. The full ten days matters: the diarrhoea will settle within two or three days, and the remaining week is the diloxanide clearing the cyst stage, which produces no symptoms but is what makes you infectious and causes relapse.

Important warnings

No alcohol during the course or for at least 48 hours after the last tablet, including alcohol-containing tonics, syrups and mouthwashes, because the reaction causes flushing, throbbing headache, vomiting and palpitations. A ten-day course makes this a longer commitment than most people expect. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders, and any existing numbness or tingling; longer metronidazole courses carry a higher risk of peripheral neuropathy, so report new numbness or burning in the hands or feet. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless prescribed. Seek urgent care for high fever with bloody diarrhoea, or severe pain and tenderness under the right ribs.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. If the course is interrupted for any reason, speak to the pharmacist rather than restarting a partial pack later, since an incomplete amoebiasis course leaves cyst carriage untreated.
