Dyrasun Suspension (Metronidazole & Diloxanide Furoate)

Description

How to use

Shake the bottle well before each dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Usually given three times daily after food, which reduces the nausea and metallic taste. Complete the entire course, generally five to ten days, without stopping when the stools firm up, because the diloxanide is still working on the cyst stage that causes no symptoms. Maintain fluid intake throughout, and give oral rehydration solution while diarrhoea continues. Do not top up the bottle or stretch doses to make it last.

Important warnings

No alcohol during the course or for 48 hours after the last dose, in any form including tonics, syrups and mouthwashes containing alcohol. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders and any existing numbness or tingling, and provide a full medicine list, since metronidazole interacts with warfarin, phenytoin, lithium and disulfiram. Dark urine is harmless. Report new tingling, numbness or burning in the hands or feet. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless a doctor prescribes it knowing you are pregnant. Get urgent care for bloody diarrhoea with high fever, severe abdominal pain, tenderness under the right ribs, or dehydration.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright and tightly capped, protected from light and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before every dose. Once opened, use within the in-use period stated on the carton, and do not use past the printed expiry date. Do not keep a part-used bottle for a future episode of diarrhoea, as the next episode may need entirely different treatment.
