Dyrasun Tablets (Metronidazole & Diloxanide Furoate)

Description

How to use

One tablet three times daily, which gives five days from this pack of fifteen, or as your prescriber directs. Take each tablet after food with a full glass of water to reduce nausea and the metallic taste, and swallow whole rather than chewing. Space the doses evenly across the day, including the evening one. Ask the pharmacist to confirm how many packs your prescribed course length requires. Complete the course even after symptoms disappear, because the second half is what clears the cyst stage.

Important warnings

Avoid alcohol during the course and for at least 48 hours after the last tablet, in any form including tonics, cough syrups and mouthwashes containing alcohol, because the reaction causes flushing, throbbing headache, vomiting and a racing heart. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders or existing nerve symptoms, and hand over a full medicine list, since metronidazole interacts with warfarin, lithium, phenytoin and disulfiram. Dark urine is expected. Report new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless a doctor prescribes it knowing you are pregnant.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from light, moisture and heat, out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Do not retain a part-used pack for a later bout of diarrhoea; the next episode needs assessing on its own terms, since bacterial, viral and inflammatory causes look similar and require different treatment.
