Clindamycin 300mg tablets contain clindamycin 300mg, an antibiotic used to treat certain serious bacterial infections.
It is commonly used for infections of the skin, teeth and gums, bones, joints, abdomen and some pelvic infections when caused by susceptible bacteria.
Take exactly as prescribed with a full glass of water and complete the course; seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, as this can be a serious side effect.
One capsule three or four times a day as prescribed, spaced as evenly as the day allows. Swallow each capsule whole with a full glass of water and stay upright for at least half an hour afterwards; clindamycin capsules can lodge in the oesophagus and cause painful ulceration if taken with a small sip of water or lying down. It may be taken with food, which reduces nausea and does not reduce absorption. Complete the entire course, and do not stop early because a dental swelling has settled.
Clindamycin carries the strongest association of any common antibiotic with Clostridioides difficile colitis. Stop the capsule and seek medical assessment immediately for diarrhoea that becomes severe, watery, frequent or bloody, or is accompanied by abdominal pain and fever, whether that happens during the course or up to two months after it. Do not take an anti-diarrhoeal medicine such as loperamide for this, as it makes the condition worse. Tell your prescriber about inflammatory bowel disease, previous colitis, liver or kidney disease, and about pregnancy or breastfeeding. Stop for a rash that blisters or peels, facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Report yellow eyes or dark urine.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from moisture, direct sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the capsules in the original blister or container until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack, and return any unused capsules to the pharmacy rather than keeping a partial course, since this is not an antibiotic that should ever be taken speculatively.
