Tagera Forte contains Secnidazole 1g (1000mg) per film-coated tablet, an antimicrobial medicine that works against certain parasites and bacteria.
It is mainly used to treat intestinal amoebiasis, giardiasis, bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis, depending on the infection being treated.
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with food; avoid alcohol during treatment and follow the prescribed dose because treatment may be a single dose or a longer course depending on the infection.
Both tablets are normally taken together as a single 2 g dose after food, or exactly as your prescriber directs. Food is important here because the entire course arrives at once and secnidazole on an empty stomach causes considerable nausea. Swallow with a full glass of water. For trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis the sexual partner is usually treated at the same time. Do not repeat the dose because symptoms have not resolved by the next day; the bowel takes several days to settle after the parasite is killed.
No alcohol for at least three days after the dose, in any form including alcohol-containing tonics, cough syrups and mouthwashes. Secnidazole persists in the body far longer than metronidazole, so the window is longer, and the reaction causes flushing, vomiting, throbbing headache and palpitations. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders, or any existing numbness or tingling. Urine may darken, which is harmless. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless a doctor specifically prescribes it. Seek urgent care for a blistering rash, severe abdominal pain, or bloody diarrhoea with high fever.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until you take them. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Because a course is usually a single dose taken at once, there should be nothing left over; return any remaining tablet to the pharmacy rather than keeping it for a future episode.
