Description

Amoxicillin 250mg capsules contain amoxicillin 250mg, a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria causing infections.

They are commonly used for bacterial infections of the throat, ears, sinuses, chest/lungs, teeth, skin and urinary tract, and may be combined with other medicines to treat H. pylori stomach infection.

Take exactly as prescribed and complete the full course; it may be taken with or without food, and should not be used for viral infections such as colds or flu or by people with a serious penicillin allergy.

How to use

One capsule three times a day, roughly eight hours apart, or exactly as prescribed. It may be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water. The 250 mg strength is often chosen for an older child able to swallow capsules, or for an adult with a milder infection or reduced kidney function, so take the number your prescriber wrote rather than assuming an adult dose. Space the doses evenly through the day and complete the entire course even after symptoms settle.

Important warnings

Not for anyone with a penicillin or beta-lactam allergy. Tell your prescriber about kidney disease, since the dose and interval may need adjusting, and about glandular fever, in which amoxicillin causes a widespread rash in the great majority of patients. Seek emergency care for hives, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheeze or breathing difficulty. Report severe or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course. Do not take amoxicillin for a cold, flu or viral cough, and do not give leftover capsules to a family member who has not been assessed.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from moisture, sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the capsules in their blister or original container until each dose rather than decanting them into a pill organiser for the week. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack, and return unused capsules to the pharmacy instead of keeping a partial course at home.
