Metronidazole 400mg tablets contain metronidazole 400mg, an antimicrobial medicine that treats certain bacterial and parasitic infections.
It is commonly used for amoebiasis, giardiasis, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, dental infections and other susceptible infections.
Take exactly as prescribed and complete the course; take with or after food if it causes stomach upset, and avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.
One tablet three times a day, giving a five-day course from this pack of fifteen, or exactly as prescribed. Take each tablet after food with a full glass of water, which reduces the nausea and metallic taste considerably. Swallow whole rather than chewing, since the tablet is extremely bitter. Space the doses evenly through the day. Complete the whole course, particularly for a dental infection or bacterial vaginosis, where stopping early is the commonest reason the problem returns within a fortnight.
Absolutely no alcohol during the course and for at least 48 hours after the last tablet, in any form including alcohol-containing tonics, cough syrups and mouthwashes; the reaction causes flushing, throbbing headache, vomiting and palpitations. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy or any seizure disorder, blood disorders, and any existing numbness or tingling. Urine may darken, which is harmless. Report new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, unsteadiness, or a severe persistent headache. Metronidazole interacts with warfarin, lithium, phenytoin and disulfiram, so provide a full medicine list. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless prescribed.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep tablets in their blister until each dose. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. Return unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping a partial course; metronidazole is one of the most commonly self-prescribed antibiotics in Kenyan households and is frequently taken for the wrong condition.
