How to use

Shake the bottle thoroughly before each dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied rather than a household spoon. Give it after food, which reduces the nausea and metallic taste that metronidazole-containing syrups cause. Follow the prescribed frequency and complete the full course, which for a protozoal infection typically runs five to ten days and continues well past the point at which the diarrhoea has stopped. Keep fluid intake high throughout, and give oral rehydration solution while stools remain loose.

Important warnings

No alcohol during the course or for at least 48 hours after the last dose, in any form, since metronidazole with alcohol causes flushing, vomiting, headache and palpitations. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders and any existing numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. Darkened urine is expected. Report new tingling or numbness. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless a doctor specifically prescribes it. Seek urgent care for bloody diarrhoea with high fever, severe abdominal pain, tenderness under the right ribs, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as sunken eyes, absent tears, reduced urine or drowsiness.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright with the cap firmly closed, protected from light and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before every dose. Use within the in-use period stated on the carton once opened, and do not use after the printed expiry date. Do not keep a part-used bottle for a later episode of diarrhoea, because the next one may have a different cause requiring different treatment.
