Secnidazole tablets contain secnidazole, an antimicrobial medicine used against certain parasites and bacteria; the strength depends on the specific tablet.
They are commonly used to treat amoebiasis, giardiasis, bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis, depending on the infection being treated.
Take exactly as prescribed, with or after food; avoid alcohol during treatment and follow the prescribed dose, which may be a single dose or several days depending on the condition.
Take both tablets together as a single 2 g dose after food, or exactly as your prescriber directs. Taking it with a meal matters, since the whole course is delivered at once and the drug causes noticeable nausea on an empty stomach. Swallow with a full glass of water. Where the diagnosis is trichomoniasis or bacterial vaginosis, the sexual partner should be treated at the same time. Do not take a second dose because symptoms persist the next day; recovery of the bowel or vaginal lining takes several days after the organism is cleared.
Avoid alcohol completely for at least three days after the dose, including alcohol-containing tonics, syrups and mouthwashes, because secnidazole remains in the body far longer than metronidazole and the reaction produces flushing, vomiting, headache and palpitations. Tell your prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders, or existing numbness and tingling. Dark urine is expected and harmless. Not for the first trimester of pregnancy or for breastfeeding unless a doctor prescribes it. Seek urgent care for a blistering rash, severe abdominal pain, or bloody diarrhoea with high fever.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets sealed in their blister until you take them. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack. As a single-dose treatment there should be nothing left over; if a tablet remains, return it to the pharmacy rather than keeping it for a future episode, which will need its own assessment.
