Description

How to use

Reconstituted with water by the pharmacist or exactly as the label instructs. Shake the bottle vigorously before every dose; amoxiclav settles quickly and an unshaken bottle delivers uneven doses. Measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Give it at the start of a feed or meal, which markedly reduces the diarrhoea this combination causes. The 457 strength is designed for twice-daily dosing, so keep a twelve-hour gap. Finish the course as prescribed, and discard the bottle at the end of its in-use period.

Important warnings

Not for a child with a penicillin allergy, or one who has had jaundice or a liver reaction after a previous amoxiclav course. Tell the prescriber about kidney or liver disease and about glandular fever, in which amoxicillin produces a widespread rash. Get emergency help for swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheeze, or a blistering or peeling rash. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or up to two months after the course, and any yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or pale stools. Never substitute one amoxiclav strength for another by volume: the ratio of amoxicillin to clavulanate differs between the 228, 312 and 457 preparations and swapping them changes the dose of both components.

Storage

Store the dry powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. Once made up, refrigerate between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, do not freeze, and discard whatever remains after seven days or the in-use period stated on the label, even if the bottle is not empty. Clavulanic acid degrades steadily once in solution, so an old bottle is not simply weaker, it is unreliable. Write the reconstitution date on the label.
