Metronidazole 200mg/5ml suspension contains metronidazole 200mg in every 5ml and is used to treat certain bacterial and parasitic infections.
It is commonly used for amoebiasis, giardiasis and infections affecting the stomach and intestines, teeth, gums and other areas caused by susceptible organisms.
Shake well before each dose and use exactly as prescribed; complete the full course and avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.
Shake vigorously before every dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Give after food. Usually three times daily. Confirm with the pharmacist that the bottle covers the whole prescribed course at your child's dose before you leave, since amoebiasis courses of seven to ten days in an older child can exceed a small bottle. Complete every dose even after the symptoms have gone, and keep up fluids and oral rehydration solution while stools remain loose.
No alcohol during treatment or for 48 hours afterwards, including alcohol-containing tonics, syrups and mouthwashes, because of the severe flushing, vomiting and palpitations that follow. Tell the prescriber about liver disease, epilepsy, blood disorders, or existing nerve symptoms, and hand over a full medicine list, since metronidazole interacts with warfarin, phenytoin, lithium and disulfiram. Dark urine is harmless. Report new numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet, unsteadiness or severe persistent headache. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy unless prescribed by a doctor who knows you are pregnant.
Store below 25 degrees Celsius, upright and tightly capped, protected from light, out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Shake before each dose. Once opened, use within the in-use period on the carton and never beyond the printed expiry date. Where the suspension is being taken for a long course, obtain the next bottle before the current one runs out so the course is not interrupted.
