How to use

Reconstituted with water by the pharmacist or exactly as the label directs. Shake before every dose and measure with the syringe or cup supplied. Cefixime is given once daily in most regimens, at roughly the same time each day, with or without food. The 50 mg per 5 ml strength is the lower-concentration preparation intended for infants and smaller children, so the volume per dose is larger than with the Forte strength; do not substitute one for the other by volume. Complete the course, which for urinary infection or typhoid is often a week or more.

Important warnings

Not for a child with a cephalosporin allergy or a severe penicillin allergy involving swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, which requires the dose to be reduced, and about previous antibiotic-associated colitis. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face or tongue, wheeze, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during or in the weeks after the course. In a young child, a urinary tract infection is not simply an infection to be treated and forgotten; recurrent infections warrant imaging to look for reflux or a structural abnormality, so follow up rather than treating repeatedly.

Storage

Keep the sealed powder below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place. After reconstitution, follow the label carefully, as many cefixime suspensions are stored below 25 degrees rather than refrigerated and are used within fourteen days. Do not freeze. Write the reconstitution date on the bottle, shake before every dose, keep the cap tight and store out of reach of children. Discard the remainder at the end of the stated period.
