Description

How to use

One tablet twice daily, twelve hours apart, or as prescribed. It can be taken with or without food, though food reduces nausea. Swallow whole with water. The twice-daily schedule is cefadroxil's main practical advantage over cefalexin, which needs three or four doses, so keep the twelve-hour interval rather than clustering the doses. Complete the whole course, and for a streptococcal throat infection take the full ten days even though you will feel well after three.

Important warnings

Not for anyone with a cephalosporin allergy, or a severe penicillin allergy involving facial swelling, hives or breathing difficulty. Tell your prescriber about kidney disease, which requires the dose to be reduced, and about previous colitis or antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek emergency care for facial or throat swelling, wheeze, or a rash that blisters or peels. Report severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea during the course or in the weeks after, and do not treat it with an over-the-counter anti-diarrhoeal. Cefadroxil can cause false positive urine glucose readings and can affect the Coombs blood test.

Storage

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from moisture, direct sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children. Keep the tablets in their blister until each dose; a bathroom cabinet is the worst storage place because of the steam. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack, and return any unused tablets to the pharmacy rather than keeping a partial course at home.
